Web Developer

Message are looking for a mid-weight developer to work in our offices on the Brighton & Hove border. You would be joining an experienced team of programmers, designers and project managers, helping to develop and deliver quality websites and systems to a wide range of clients.

This role will focus on backend development using PHP and MySQL.

Your job at Message…

You will join a small, enthusiastic team of four developers and a production assistant (lead by .Net Young Developer Of The Year nominee Joe Holdcroft), a projects manager and creative director. You will get to work on a variety of interesting projects, each one different from the last. Everyone gets involved at multiple stages, contributing to the team effort. You'll work on some amazingly complex existing systems as well as getting stuck in to brand new developments and applications.

As an employer Message is flexible, understanding, and a good fun place to work. The atmosphere is always friendly and hardworking. The salary is aimed at someone in the early stage of their career development, but you will be encouraged to grow and learn, taking on as much responsibility as you are comfortable with, which will make your progress quick and rewarding. We'll send you to conferences or training sessions if you're interested (and if you're not interested, well, you probably aren't the right person).

Our ideal candidate would have:

  • At least a year's experience
  • Experience using a Mac (we're all Mac/Linux here!)
  • The ability to solve complex problems elegantly
  • Knowledge of object-orientated PHP 5 and MySQL
  • Solid HTML skills and an understanding of semantic mark-up
  • Understanding of accessibility and web standards
  • Willingness and ability to work collaboratively and on their own initiative
  • An eye for detail
  • A sense of humour
  • The ability to talk to clients with confidence and professionalism over email, on the phone and face-to-face

And knowledge or experience in the following would be an advantage but are not requirements:

  • MVC systems or frameworks (e.g. Symfony, Zend Framework, CodeIgniter)
  • Testing and deploying large scale projects
  • Ruby on Rails
  • Experience integrating with numerous APIs
  • Subversion
  • Server administration
  • CSS Experience

In return you'll get to work with exciting clients as part of a team in the lovely seaside town of Brighton, two minutes from the beach. We'll make sure you're set up with everything you need to do the job and we always have a steady supply of fruit, biscuits and tea/coffee.

Send your applications to jobs@message.uk.com.

Please include your CV and some solid examples of recent work - a code sample demonstrating object-orientated PHP experience. We're looking for clear, concise and clean code.
